How to Self-Install Rapid Rivets

Whether you’re making a wallet, a handbag, or another leather item, rivets can take your project to a whole new level. Though these simple details are quick to install, they can easily give your project a professional look. Find out how to self-install rapid rivets in five easy steps.
Gather Your Tools and Supplies
To self-install rapid rivets, you’ll just need a few simple tools and supplies. First, gather your rapid rivets, and make sure the post is the appropriate length for the project you’re working on. You’ll want it to be long enough to extend through the material but not so long that it leaves a gap, so the length may differ between leather, fabric, and vinyl. You’ll need a hole punch, a hammer or mallet, a setting tool, and a pen.
Mark the Spot
Next, mark the spot where you’ll be installing each rapid rivet. Use a measuring tape to get the exact placement, and use a pen to mark where you’ll place the post.
Punch the Hole
Protect your work surface with a mat or cutting board. Then set the hole punch to the appropriate diameter and use the hole punch to remove the material from the spots you marked.
Place the Rivet
Push the rapid rivet post through the hole you just created, and apply the cap to the other side. You should hear the two components click together as they join.
Set the Rivet
Finally, you’ll want to set the rapid rivet in place. While you can use a hammer or mallet alone to do this, you may prefer to use a setting tool with the hammer or mallet. This helps maintain the unblemished appearance of the rivet and can give the project more of a professional look. Once you’ve tapped the rivet cap into place, the installation is complete.
