History of Hook and Loop Tape

Hook and loop tape is a durable, reusable fastening tape used in homes, offices, and classrooms around the world. This adhesive tape is ideal for home repair jobs, craft projects, and much more.

The Origins of Velcro

Developed by Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral in 1941, the invention was inspired by what happened when he took his dog for a walk. He noticed how tiny burrs clung to his trousers and dog’s fur when they walked outside. Seizing an opportunity, he used the burrs as inspiration for a revolutionary new adhesive. Hook and loop tape features two essential elements for functionality. One side, the rougher side is like the ‘hook’, while the softer side is the loop. This clever invention helps hook and loop tape stick together.

De Mestral’s system used two strips of material, one covered in thousands of tiny hooks and the other with matching loops. When pushed together, the strips locked in place. He called it Velcro, a portmanteau of the words velvet and crochet, and formally patented the invention in 1955. Velcro’s design remains largely unchanged to this day.

Why Call It Hook and Loop Tape?

Hook and loop tape is the generic name for tape which uses the same technology del Mestral pioneered but isn’t made by the Velcro company. By rights, only hook and loop tape made by Velcro can be called Velcro, just like only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region can be called Champagne. However, de Mestral’s patent expired in 1978, so now any company anywhere in the world is free to use the concept to create its own hook and loop tape. You’ll find that generic hook and loop tape performs just as well as Velcro. It’s often cheaper too, as it doesn’t have a big brand name attached.
