Bulk Velcro Is Used In Many Industries In Many Different Ways

Georges de Mestral invented the now-famous Velcro fastener almost by accident. The story has become fairly well known, but it all began in 1941, when he decided to go for a walk in the woods with his dog. Upon returning from the walk, he noticed burrs stuck to his pants, as well as to the fur of the dog.

These burrs would serve as the inspiration for the hook and loop design that became his famous invention. Nowadays, so many industries use Velcro that it is common to purchase bulk Velcro. For all Velcro wholesale needs, contact Feiner Supply.

Coming up with the hook and loop design was no simple thing. Georges de Mestral didn’t simply observe the burrs stuck to his pants and replicate the design immediately. On the contrary, it took almost eight years of tireless research.

Though the little hooks on the burr were the inspiration, it took some real ingenuity to come up with the actual working design. Finally, de Mestral created one strip of fabric covered with thousands of tiny hooks and another strip of fabric covered in very small loops. It was the breakthrough in design that made Velcro work.

He formally patented the design in 1942, naming it “Velcro” as a combination of the words “velvet” and “crochet.” At first, it was made out of cotton, but de Mestral found that cotton wore out too quickly. Finally, he tried nylon, and this proved to be far more durable.

The Zipper-less Zipper

The first news reports about this ingenious product referred to it as the “zipper-less zipper.” It was featured in TIME magazine in 1958, where this product, which so many now take for granted, was seen as a truly creative and fascinating invention.

Velcro fastener was given a tremendous boost in popularity when NASA began to use it in the early 1960s. It proved to be a very convenient way for astronauts to fasten pens, packets of food, tools and equipment to keep them from floating away.

After this, many other industries began to find uses for it from hospitals to automobile manufacturers. It’s been used by clothing and shoe companies, as well as toys companies. The uses seem to be endless.

Nowadays, you might see people using it to hold their tablet computers in place, and the Army has used it for things like fastening name tags in place.
